I think there should be a comparison and an item "total" (the minus or plus number that appears below the skills) with the modification and without, so it would be less confusing.  For example, a mask is -69 but it has the modification with it already, it should also show its total without the modification, so we know if the "plain" item is better or worse than the one with the modification.

I guessing you talking a compare of a new item that has a slot not used?

 

 

because if a plain item () no slots ) is listed already as -69 than that means it will always be less than one with the mod

 

now if we talking item with not used slot vs item with used slot

 

let's say a cape that is 200-50-12-38 and empty slot  vs a 150(+25)-30(+100)-0-10 and the new cape is shown as -15, if you add the modifications to the -15 ( 125-15)  you come that the new cape without mods is actually 110 better than one with mods( taking away the values from mod, you just need to produce a mod that is more than 110 added value to make the new cape better than the old cape

Exactly. Wouldn't it be easier if it could be done for you instead? It's not anything complicated.

is not that hard to see and calculate in seconds, and remember that if too many "little things" are done by the HZ computer, it means the more important things will not have room to be implemented
