My suggestion is this:

 

Make some clothes like capes invisible. Not all super heroes wear capes (and no, I won't take off my cape because of the stat bonuses it provides - so invisible clothes! ).

I like this idea---but maybe not make invisible clothes per say, but have a tick box option next to each item box indicating a show/hide function. That way a user can decide if they want their items to appear to be worn or not for appearance reasons (i.e. no cape).
