While I'm doing missions and training, I like to watch Netflix. There's a lot of good stuff on there. I was wondering what other people have found on Netflix that they think is worth watching. What are your favorite TV shows and movies on the Netflix and why? What are they about (no spoilers)? Please include uncommon and little known shows and movies.
Journey to the West
If you don't mind subtitles, this flick from Hong Kong is one of the funniest movies I've seen in a loooooooooong time. It is a Chinese fairy tale that is about a monk who tries to become a demon hunter. As far as the actual fairy tale goes, it is the second half of the story of the Monkey King, Sun Wukong, but is actually about the monk who seeks out Sun Wukong in order to help him capture a particularly troublesome demon.
It is a comedy, love story and spiritual journey. I loved it! To be completely honest, I watched it 3 times in a row, I enjoyed it so much. Provided you don't mind subtitles, and especially if you like foreign films, I HIGHLY recommend it.
The Almighty Johnsons
This sitcom from New Zealand is absolutely hilarious! I think I could best describe it as Seinfeld meets Friends meets Norse mythology. There's lots of skin involved because this is a show from a part of the world that isn't as prude as the USA. So be careful not to watch it in front of children.
The basic premise of the show is that the Norse gods, like Odin and Thor, are reincarnated throughout history in the bodies of mortals. The show takes place in modern times and is filled with the funniest hijinks I've seen in a sitcom in some time. For example, Thor is an over weight redneck with a construction hammer as Mjolnir. Some of the stories even parallel actual Norse myths.
I watched this show straight through. I HIGHLY recommend it for audiences who enjoy comedy and are over 18 years of age, especially if you're a fan or student of Norse mythology.
