coin price tag for energy refills scale with your characters level...
if you play a lot and tend to need refills, you can save a few coins by doing more money-gathering missions first and wait with donations.
once your energy bar is low enough for refills, buy them early... you wont have leveled as much yet, hence they are cheaper.
do the exp-heavier missions you plan on during the second part of your day.

if you can, choose energy cheap missions.
always provided they have a good ratio per energy in the field you desire.
items found in missions rarely worth much, look b4 you leap.
smaller missions = more total missions = better chance at finding a donut.

today i didnt pay attention and was just a few coins short from buying my 2nd energy upgrade, since i had just donated.
could make up by working, selling dueling or completing missions..
keep an eye on your money so you have the refill cash when you need it!
